and examples of the various aspects of fiction. Of course, we know
that writing does not take place in a series of separable units but
all more or less at once in a kind of flux. As long as we writers
keep this basic fact in mind, we can profit from separating these
elements as a convenience of discussion and understanding.
Below, are links to explanations, examples, and exercises dealing
with nine basic elements of fiction, along with questions we’re
asked on a regular basis by new writers who want to become more proficient
at handling them. In our workshops, we that even experienced writers
benefit from a review of these vital basics. In other words, we invite
